Timanfaya Lanzarote – Why You Need To Visit

If you go to Lanzarote Island and do not visit Timanfaya, it’s like you have never been there at all. Timanfaya Lanzarote is the place where nature set it course and made its own natural landmark. This place is the pride of the Island, representing the very beautiful handmade work of nature, a place you can see how colorful is the earth, a place where man can see and be awestruck by its beauty.

Timanfaya Lanzarote used to be a very fertile farming area of twelve villages. This fertile ground was destroyed during the 1730’s when the volcanoes erupted. It was the longest ever in world history, it lasted for nearly six years from 1730 to 1736 and the last recorded was 1824. In 1968, The Timanfaya National Park, or Parque nacional de timanfaya, was created, further drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists to come and visit the place because of its rare beauty.

The eruptions of the 1700s created over one hundred volcanoes in the area now called Montañas del Fuego or Fire Mountain together with 32 new volcanoes around the island. The place stirred interest from scientists to curiousity travelers because of how the devastating eruption created these mountains. The volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote is inhabited by rare plant species that can withstand the fiery temperature in the area and has created a unique landscape that only nature can offer.

Visitors can wander around the Parque Nacional Timanfaya or take a Coach Trip around the park along the so-called La Ruta de los Volcanos. The moment you arrive at the visitors’ car park you will already feel and witness ‘how hot’ the area is. Hotel guides would inform you that temperatures just a few meters below the surface reach between 400°C and 600°C that a dry brush thrown into a hole in the ground catches fire immediately.

On certain hours tour staff would demonstrate the awesome power beneath by pouring water poured into a bore hole and, seconds later, steam forming like a mini-geyser would shoot into the sky. Restaurants here offer food cooked or grilled with heat from vents of the volcano.

If you want a lunar experience then the park is the best place because of its ‘Martian’ landscape, NASA used pictures of the park to brief the astronauts before launching their lunar mission. The impact of the volcanic eruptions created a surreal place with its own color blends of red, purple and greens that watching them on post cards won’t give justice to the unique topography and beauty of the place. In fact, in 1993 Timanfaya National Park was declared by UNESCO as Biosphere reserve.

People who visit Timanfaya Lanzarote will have choices of hotels and apartments where they can stay and enjoy the beaches and the views of the islands. They can also enjoy having a boat ride to explore the island. Remember, “Travel Lanzarote!
